The National Research Institute of Legal Policy is responsible for governmental research under the Ministry of Justice. Our main task is to produce research on crime and law to aid planning and decision-making in legal policy. In addition to research tasks, the law on National Research Institute of Legal Policy states that other tasks include domestic and international co-operation in our field of study, and taking part in researcher education together with universities.

The National Research Institute of Legal Policy has many collaborators. Ministry of Justice and several agencies operating under the Ministry, such as Criminal Sanctions Agency and judicial administration, are the main partners. Collaboration is conducted also between administrative sectors: agencies from the administrative branches of Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, and Ministry of Employment and the Economy are important collaborators. In addition, joint research projects are done with universities home and abroad. Within governmental research, Police College and Institute of Welfare and Health are important collaborators.
